Conversational Hypnosis
You certainly know the scene in Star Wars when Obi Wan just looks at a trooper, waves his hands and convinces him that the escaped fugitives are not the people he is looking for. Do you think this is pure fantasy and only possible in movies? What we see here is called conversational hypnosis, and you might be surprised if i tell you that this is in fact a very real thing.
Conversational hypnosis is not as simple as it might look. Instead, it is a series of well-choreographed and learned strategies and manipulations. However, it works, and often in shocking ways, as seen in this controversial guide.
Milton Erickson was the first who discovered the principles of conversational hypnosis.
He believed that trance states were not rare occurrences that had to be elaborately induced. According to him, people slip into trance states throughout the day, for example, while waiting for a bus or concentrating hard.
Erickson concluded that trying to induce a trance in someone or trying to give them direct suggestions might lead to resistance. Instead, he preferred to use rapport and suggestions. He also used confusion to induce trance states.
What is Rapport?
One basic aspect in conversational hypnosis is creating a rapport with the subject. This means agreeing with what they tell you. If the subject says, “Oh my god, i am lost!” the matching response is, “You’re right. You are lost!”
Use of Confusion
Conversational hypnosis uses confusion to its advantage. Sometimes a simple question might do the trick: “Well you are certainly lost now, can you be absolutely sure that you wont come up with a solution pretty soon?”
The other technique used to create confusion in conversational hypnosis is to encourage resistance.
The hypnotist might say “There is no way out and you are lost. It’s simply impossible. You don’t have a chance…” At some point, the subject might begin arguing that the problem is indeed not so unsolvable after all!
Another way of confusion is to suggest that the subject do something paradox or something which just wont work for them. For example, an overweight person is being encouraged to gain weight.
Suggestion in Hypnosis
The last step in conversational hypnosis is to conduct an indirect suggestive manipulation such as saying, “Oh, see, now you’re not that lost anymore, aren’t you?” or “Well, i cant put my finger on it but it seems to me you look more optimistic than you did not that long ago.”
Conversational hypnosis is no easy task. It is a skill which needs to be learned and it is best left to professionals.
The human psychology is deep - there are uncharted areas and conversational hypnosis is one of them.
What counts is that it exists and can be learned. In this article we could only touch the bare basics, of course.
